How can you engage Vasi in meaningful learning experiences in the content areas?

How can I help Vasi in Math?

Vasi does reasonably well in Math, as she is adept at following patterns. At times, if she is not aware the pattern has changed, she will carry the pattern on, even if the directions for the assignment have changed. Vasi doesn't necessarily recognize if she is making errors, but once it is pointed out to her, she can often correct it with little difficulty. After a mini-lecture given by a teacher, Vasi typically will draw circles on her paper until she is shown how to do the assignment. She struggles most with story problems. Take a few minutes to consider:

1) What does a typical Math classroom look like? What happens at the beginning, middle and end of class?
2) In what ways is Vasi challenged in this setting?
3) In what ways can you draw on Vasi's strengths in this setting?
4) As Vasi's Math teacher, what are the three key elements to his success in your classroom based on the resources she brings to school?
5) What is one pedagogical strategy you can implement to encourage Vasi's success?

How can I help Vasi in Science?

Vasi has little experience with science, as her teachers in her home country thought it was too difficult for her. However, she seems to enjoy experiments, and watching the videos in her Biology class. Vasi does not seem to understand the Biology lectures but can underline words when she hears them if she is given the teacher's powerpoint. If given small chunks of information, Vasi seems able to make connections around themes. Her parents study biology with her every night, though she is unable to read or write well in English. Please consider:

How can I help Vasi in Social Studies?

Vasi struggles in social studies classes. Her current class, American History, involves a lot of information that she does not comprehend. When she goes to her study skills classes, she gets help with her social studies homework. Typically, a teaching assistant will tell her a story about the current topic. Then, she is able to answer questions, typically in very short phrases or sentences. However, she is not able to keep up with the pace of the class. Take a few minutes to consider:

1) What does a typical American History classroom look like? What happens at the beginning, middle and end of class?
2) In what ways is Vasi challenged in this setting?
3) In what ways can you draw on Vasi's strengths in this setting?

How can I help Vasi in her (SPED) Social Skills class?

Vasi really likes her Special Education teacher who works with a small group of Autism spectrum disorder students on their social interaction skills. Vasi is the only bilingual student in the class. The teacher works hard to make sure 1) Vasi can understand each task, and 2) to make her feel included in the culture of the class. When Vasi is very uncomfortable, she will respond to questions from the teacher in her first language. When thinking about strategies to help Vasi in this context, please consider:

1) What does a typical project based classroom look like? What happens at the beginning, middle and end of class?
2) In what ways is Vasi challenged in this setting?
3) In what ways can you draw on Vasi's strengths in this setting?
4) As Vasi's Special Education teacher, what are the three key elements to his success in your classroom based on the resources she brings to school?
5) What is one pedagogical strategy you can implement to encourage Vasi's success?
