Picture-Cued Main Ideas Writing Practice

This is an intensive (controlled) writing assessment. It provides the students with multiple picture cues and then asks them to write a main idea sentence about each picture. The directions are very specific and the students’ writing is controlled to include just a main idea, without much creative freedom. The assessment is formal but could be either formative or summative depending on the assessors’ objectives and when the tasks accomplished either throughout the unit or at its conclusion. It is practical because it is inexpensive and fairly short as each student is only expected to write one sentence per picture. It is authentic as well because the majority of the images are of daily occurrences many of the students will be familiar with. It has only moderate reliability because there is not necessarily one correct answer per question. Each student and grader could interpret each picture slightly differently.
