Minimal Pairs Bingo Lesson and Activity

This is a perceptive reading assessment best suited for elementary ELLs. It is an informal formative assessment. Specifically it tests students understanding of minimal pairs, just one component of discourse and reading. It has students fill in bingo blanks with words from a word bank and then select the corresponding minimal pairs. The strength of this activity is that it’s a game that students will enjoy and look forward to. It can also easily be adapted and used multiple times to track improvement, etc. It isn’t the most practical since it takes time to prep and play the game and also energy from the assessor or multiple assessors to observe everyone, but the students’ enjoyment of the activity out way what it may lack.
