Lee was born in the US to a Hmong family. He started school before he could speak English and was initially given some language support before moving to a school without support. He was regularly behind his peers, and at times placed in special education courses because he was not performing at grade level. When he moved to a new high school, he was particularly self-conscious of his academic ability, race, and appearance and had a low self-esteem. Lee found refuge in drawing and recreating anime art. He was known to be a good listener by students in his classes.
