Iris came to the US for 1 year as a five year old, moved back to Mexico and returned to the US when she was sixteen years old. Iris was very quiet and reserved in school, intimidated by her own standards of perfection. She rarely spoke aloud, and when she did, it was typically in Spanish. Iris had experienced good, uninterrupted schooling in Mexico between ages 6-16. She was well read and literate in Spanish. She was determined to go to college to create life opportunities that she didn’t have as a young child.
