This assessment is for extensive reading. It is a formal, formative assessment. When students are just starting to read longer passages, they may not know the difference between texts, or how to read certain texts. This assessment allows students to learn more about reading certain types of genres, while being asked to think critically. Extensive reading is all about reading passages and beginning to think about them. Here it scaffolds the students up to a point where they would be able to critically read on their own. It compares two types of genres, asks the students to infer meanings of made up words based on the context of what they are reading, and allows them to break up into groups to discuss the importance of reading each word. While this may not have a long passage for students to read I think it is more important for them to start reading critically and work their way up to larger passages. This assessment allows them to do just that.
