Discrete Skills Inventory

This is an intensive writing assessment for Secondary School ELL students. The reason this is an intensive writing assessment is because the Discrete Skills Inventory specifies the outlined objectives for how students will learn to write and what they will learn to write. There are outlined guidelines for writing that the students will follow. The writing is also very directed and does not allow for full freedom. The Discrete Skills Inventory outlines what vocabulary the students will learn and in what order the vocabulary should be taught. It does not go into focusing on meaning, as much as it focuses on the specific forms. As long as a teacher decides which meaning and context to use for the vocabulary, teachers can use the Discrete Skills inventory to decide which aspects of vocabulary use to teach first and show how to use the vocabulary correctly and appropriately (SH).
